Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Trap events goes into endless loop in INCHARGE-OI
Very high count on trap event even though Smarts does not show a trap flood

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

The trapd.conf configuration file in the /local/conf/icoi directory is configured to send traps to itself, as in the following example:

FORWARD: *.*.*.* .* <0-3> * 10.9.1.1:162

If the Smarts trap adapter is running on the same IP address that is configured to receive the forwarded traps (10.9.1.1 in the above example) and listening on port 162 (the port used by the Smarts trap adapter to listen for traps), this will cause traps to enter an endless loop, with the Smarts trap adapter continuously forwarding traps to itself.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, do the following:

  1. Open the trapd.conf configuration file for editing as follows:

    <BASEDIR>/SAM/smarts/bin/sm_edit conf/icoi/trapd.conf

  2. Verify that the Smarts trap adapter is configured to forward traps to itself as in the example shown in the Cause statement.
  3. Comment out (#) the problem trap forwarding entry to disable it, as in the following example:

    #FORWARD: *.*.*.* .* <0-3> * 10.9.1.1:162

  4. Restart the trap adapter to apply the changes in the active system.
