Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - SMARTS

Cause

This problem can have the following causes:

  • MBIM is not running: To get impacts calculated in InCharge8 you need to have a maintenance and business impact manager running MBIM. See the following Fix statement for how to resolve this issue.

  • Insufficent licensing: The impact value is calculated by the Smarts BIM model within Smarts SAM. If the Smarts SAM Presentation level has no BIM licenses or insufficient BIM licenses, it will not display the impact value.

Resolution

To resolve the MBIM is not running issue, do the following:

  1. Use the following command string to start MBIM:

    SAM/smarts/sm_server --broker=<localhost:1234> --name=<INCHARGE-MBIM> --config=bim --subscribe=default --norestore --daemon output

  2. In the Domain Manager Administration Console, select INCHARGE-MBIM from the Manager list field.
  3. Select Topology > Add Source to launch the Add Source dialog.
  4. In the Add Source dialog, select SA from the Element Type list field
  5. Enter the name of the Service Assurance Manager server (for example, INCHARGE-SA) in the Element Name field
  6. Click OK to add the Service Assurance Manager server as a topology source.
  7. Ensure that the MBIM domain is listed in your Global Console at the following location:

    ICS Configuration > IC-Domain Configuration > Domains

  8. Run a re-configure operation.
  9. In the Domain Manager Administration Console (when attached to the MBIM), you should see the following four sections:

    • BIM_Manager
    • InChargeDomain
    • InChargeService
    • Session

  10. It can take a few minutes for the impacts to show up. If the impacts do not show up after a few minutes, you can force the issue by running the following command:

    SAM/smarts/bin/dmctl -broker=<localhost:1234> --name=<INCHARGE-MBIM> invoke GA_Driver::ICS-Impact-Driver start

To resolve the license issue:

Open the license file for the Smarts installation and confirm there are a sufficient amount of AP_BUSINESS license features, one for each instance of BIM running.  If not the Smarts license has to be updated to add AP_BUSINESS licenses.  Contact the EMC sales account manager to have the AP_BUSINESS feature added to the set of licensed features for the installation and have the license file update created or re-issued.
