Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

Where can I find the uiClient.txt file used by the Smarts Network Configuration Manager (Smarts NCM) client?
Is there a way to collect the same data as contained in the Smarts NCM uiClient.txt file?

Menu options are missing or incorrect in Smarts NCM Client UI
When referencing a menu/option or looking up data within the Smarts NCM UI, the menu option is missing or is not correctly viewable, or the option/action is not correctly opening or being displayed

EMC Support has requested the uiClient.txt file from the Client machine being used to log into the Smarts NCM Application but I cannot find it

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - NCM

Resolution

If you encounter this issue, do the following:
  1. Reproduce the issue from within the Smarts NCM UI
  2. Find and provide the uiClient.txt file. The uiClient.txt file should be located in the following directory (depending on environment):

    Windows Vista/7:
    C:\Users\<user-profile-name>\VoyenceControl\logs\<VoyenceServerName>

    Windows XP:

  3. C:\Documents and Settings\<ntdomainname>\VoyenceControl\logs\<VoyenceServerName>

If you cannot find the uiClient.txt file
If the uiClient.txt file cannot be found or the file path above does not exist in your environment, you can collect the same data by enabling Java logging as follows:

  1. Access the Windows Control Panel. Find and launch "Java" to open the Java Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to the "Java" tab and click "view."
  3. In the Runtime Parameters section, place the following:

    -Djavaplugin.trace=true

  4. Click "OK" then navigate to the "Advanced" tab. Expand "Debugging" and check the Enable tracing and Enable logging checkboxes.
  5. Expand "Java console" and select the "Show console" radio button.
  6. Click "Apply". The Java Console window should now be running, logging application data in real time to a file.
  7. Open up a Web Browser and access Smarts NCM.
  8. Reproduce the same behavior in the NCM UI as done previously that is the issue being investigated.
  9. Navigate to the following directory where the Java Console is logging application data (depending on environment):

    Windows 7
    C:\Users\<user-profile-name>\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\log

    Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user-profile-name>\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\log

  10. Collect and supply the *.trace file from the above directory to EMC Support for Smarts NCM. This file accurately mirrors the same output that is being written to the Java Console Window after reproducing the issue.
