"Created By" column displays "Unknown" in device configuration revisions history

Issue/Introduction

Why is "Unknown" displayed in the Created By column in Smarts Network Configuration Manager (Smarts NCM) device configuration revisions history? 

Environment

VMware Smart Assurance - NCM

Cause

If a user schedules a push/pull from NCM or modifies the device in a Cut-Through, it would show that user in the Created By column. SNMP Traps and Syslog messages would show EXTERNAL. Configuration revisions marked as "Unknown" indicate changes made outside of the NCM system such as someone using telnet to connect to the device and make a change.

Resolution

To ensure that the user is indicated for device changes, make all NCM device changes using NCM push or Cut-Through functionality.
