Issue/Introduction

The NSX Manager VM was deployed in early versions of NSX with an "E1000" virtual Ethernet adapter, and subsequently it was changed to "vmxnet3" which is now recommended.

This article is designed to provide the optimal way to change this with minimal disruption and risk.

Environment

NSX for vSphere 6.x

Resolution

The overall steps include the following:
  1. Collect a Tech Support bundle for the existing NSX Manager and put it aside in case it is needed later during troubleshooting if an issue arises.

  2. Take a backup of the NSX Manager.

  3. Power down the NSX Manager. After it is powered off, plan to keep it for a period of 7 days, before deleting it. Also, it is a good idea to "Edit Settings" after power off, and uncheck the "Connect at power on" setting for the NIC. (Note the network settings (IP/subnet/gateway/dns/ntp & SFTP/FTP settings)

  4. Deploy a fresh NSX Manager of the same version as the one you are using. After it is powered up, restore the backup that was taken in step 2.

  5. After 1 hour, collect a Tech Support bundle for the new NSX manager and put it aside in case it is requested during troubleshooting of any issues over the next 7 days.
