Issue/Introduction

This articles provides steps to disable VMware Tools access for other users.

Resolution

Disabling access to VMware Tools in the system tray by setting ShowTray to 0 in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VMware, Inc.\VMware Tools , does not prevent other users from accessing the VMware Tools from the Control Panel.
To ensure users cannot access VMware Tools from the system tray or control panel:

Note: This procedure modifies the Windows registry. Before making any registry modifications, ensure that you have a current and valid backup of the registry and the virtual machine. For more information on backing up and restoring the registry, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 136393.

  1. Go to C:\Program files\VMware\VMware Tools .
  2. Right-click VMControlPanel.cpl properties and choose Security.
  3. Click Advanced and deselect Allow inheritable permissions.
  4. Click Deny for Read and Execute and Read for the users.
  5. Log in as an Administrator.
  6. Right-click the VMware Tools system tray icon and click Disable.
  7. In the registry editor, delete the VMware Tools key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run .
