Unable to install Windows 2008 R2 64bit as a virtual machine

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Windows 2008 64bit fails to install
• You see error messages similar to:
  
  • Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
    To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings and then click next
    3. Click repair the computer
    
    If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance

• You may see messages similar to:

• You may see log events in the virtual machine Events tab and vmware-#.log similar to:
  
  [msg.monitorInit.vmm64.initHost.VTDisabled] This CPU is VT-capable, but VT is not enabled (check your BIOS/firmware settings).
  vmx| [msg.cpuid.noLongmode] You have configured this virtual machine as a 64-bit guest operating system. However, this host's CPU is not capable of running 64-bit virtual machines or this virtual machine has 64-bit support disabled.

Resolution

This issue can occur if certain options in the BIOS are not enabled. These options vary by hardware manufacturers. For more information, contact your hardware vendor.

To resolve this issue:

1. Verify that the following options are enabled on your server's BIOS:
   • No-Execute Memory Protection
   • Execute Disable
   • Virtualization Technology (VT)
     
2. Save the settings in your server's BIOS.
3. Power off the ESX host to ensure the options are saved to the system ROM.
4. Power up your ESX host.
