Upgrading a host using HP Custom Image VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 1 fails with conflicting vib error for broadcom bnx2x and bnx2

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• Unable to upgrade an ESXi host to 5.5 Update 1 using HP Custom Image for ESXi 5.5 Update 1 June 2014
• Scanning or remediating a host using VMware vCenter Update Manager fails
• You see the error:

The upgrade contains the following set of conflicting VIBs:

Broadcom_bootbank_net-bnx2x_1.7a.10.v55.1-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820
Broadcom_bootbank_net-bnx2_2.2.5d.v55.2-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820

Remove the conflicting VIBs or use Image Builder to create a custom upgrade ISO image that contains the newer versions of the conflicting VIBs and try to upgrade again

• You are unable to upgrade the host by booting from the CD
• Attempting to upgrade the host by booting from the CD fails with the error:

The system encountered the following error(s)

<CONFLICTING_VIBS ERROR:Vibs on the host are conflicting with vibs in metadata.Remove the conflicting VIBs or use Image Builder to create a custom ISO providing newer versions of the conflicting vibs. </FONT>

Cause

This issue occurs due to the version numbering of the Broadcom NX2 and Nx2x drivers within the HP Custom Image for ESXi 5.5 Update 1, which prevents the upgrade installation of these drivers in ESXi 5.5 Update 1.

The HP Custom Image for ESXi 5.5 Update 1 June 2014 image contains the Broadcom NX2 and Nx2x driver.

Resolution

This is a known issue with ESXi 5.5 Update 1.

To resolve the issue,download and install new driver version 1.710.10.v55.1

To work around this issue, use one of these methods:

• Contact HP support and request an updated HP Custom Image for ESXi 5.5 Update 1.
• Upgrade the host using the HP 5.5 Update 1 March 2014 image and then apply latest patches.
• Build a custom ISO with HP 5.5 Update 1 June 2014. Remove the Broadcom NX2 packages and replace with the older version from the HP 5.5 GA build available at VMware Downloads. Use this modified image to upgrade the hosts.
  
  Note: Using a custom image does not prevent you from using the HP image at a later date.
