Issues using Enteo Netinstall or Microsoft Windows Deployment Services (WDS) to PXE boot virtual machines

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

If you are using Enteo Netinstall or Microsoft Windows Deployment Services (WDS) to PXE boot virtual machines, you may experience these symptoms:

• A virtual machine fails to get an IP address from the DHCP server.
• A virtual machine fails to load the WinPE or WIM image.
• A virtual machine loads the WinPE or WIM image, but the load fails to complete.
• The Windows Boot Manager screen may display the error:
  
  Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
  
  1. insert you Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
  2. Choose your language setting, and then click "Next."
  3. Click "Repair your computer."
  
  If you do not have the disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
  
  Status: 0xc0000001
  
  Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

Note: You may also see the status 0xc000000f.

Resolution

This issue has been resolved in:

• ESXi 5.1 Update 1 – You can download the latest update from the vSphere Download Center.
• ESXi 5.0 Update 2 – You can download the latest update from the vSphere Download Center.
• A patch for ESXi 4.1 – For more information, see VMware ESXi 4.1 Patch Release ESXi410-201301401-SG (2041338).
• A patch for ESX 4.1 – For more information, see VMware ESX 4.1 Patch Release ESX410-201301401-SG (2041333).
  

To workaround this issue in other ESX/ESXi versions, configure the virtual machine to use the e1000 physical driver rather than the virtual driver (vmxnet/vmxnet3). For more information, see Manually configuring a virtual machine to use the e1000 network adapter driver (1003020).
