Backup/Restore performance issues over VDDK NDB/NSBSSL transport modes using Windows Proxy

Issue/Introduction

Customer may experience slow backup or restore over VDDK NDB/NBDSSL transport modes using Windows proxy servers, and may observe the job takes more time when vSphere is upgraded to 7.0.2.

Environment

• VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.2

Cause

Cause is due to the current client receive buffer size and server send buffer size, which is updated to new value.

Resolution

We have improved the performance for Windows proxy backup using NBD/NBDSSL with VDDK 7.0.3 Patch 2 and VDDK 8.0.

Workaround: We have some improvements noted in Backup speed is slow over NBD transport mode for VMs on high-latency storage.

Additional Information

VMware Engineering has identified the issue only happens for Windows proxy. We have improved the performance for Windows proxy backup using NBD/NBDSSL with VDDK 8.0 and VDDK 7.0.3 Patch 2.
