Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

In VMware vCenter Server 7.0, when attempting to add a new disk (VMDK) to a virtual machine (VM) and it breaks a rule in Storage DRS (SDRS), a warning message will not appear. Nothing happens when you press the OK button, and you don't get any messages telling you what went wrong.

This behavior differs in vCenter Server 8.0, where you get a warning message if your action breaks an SDRS rule.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.0.x

Cause

In vCenter Server 7.0, the system does not check when adding a new disk to a virtual machine if it violates a Storage DRS (SDRS) rule.

Resolution

Update to vCenter Server version 8.0.

In vCenter 8.0, a prompt is displayed when attempting a similar action that violates an SDRS rule, which indicates the settings cannot be saved.

Workaround:
  1. Log into the vCenter Server client.
  2. Navigate to the cluster settings where the virtual machine (VM) is located.
  3. Find the Storage DRS (SDRS) settings.
  4. Look for the rule named "Keep VMDKs together by default."
  5. Disable this rule.
  6. Add the additional disks to the VM as needed.
