Guest Customization of Linux virtual machine generates false or out of order vCenter events

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• The Customization succeeded event is generated incorrectly causing the user to think the VM is customized successfully while it was not.
• The Customization succeeded VC event is generated but followed by a CustomizationNetworkSetupFailed vCenter event
• This issue is affected in all versions prior to vSphere 6.7

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.0 Beta

Cause

The guest customization code generates Customization succeeded event before attempting to connect the NICs in the VM. So if the NICS failed to connect, the host layer generates another CustomizationNetworkSetupFailed vCenter event.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in vCenter Server 6.7 available at VMware Downloads.
