Issue/Introduction

This article explains the best practices to create vRNI Platform Clusters.

Environment

VMware vRealize Network Insight 3.x

Resolution

Design considerations

  • Supported size of the Cluster: Minimum: 3 Maximum:10 [Only from vRNI 3.6]
  • For version earlier to vRNI 3.5, the limit is restricted to minimum size of 3 and maximum size of 5.
  • Only Large brick size is supported for clustering.
Note: Create Cluster option is grayed out for Medium Brick.
  • For vRNI 3.6 and later: Cluster can be expanded after it is created.
  • For vRNI 3.5 and earlier:  Cluster creation is one-time activity. For example, if we create 3 node cluster, it cannot be upgraded to 5 Node Cluster later.
  • Keep the vRNI to the latest version before creating cluster
  • After a cluster is created, services will be distributed among the cluster.
  • HA is not supported. Services will be affected when member node goes down.
Recommendations
  • Upgrade vRNI to the latest version before creating cluster.
  • Backup the vRNI appliances before creating cluster.

Creating vRNI Platform Clusters

To create vRNI Platform Clusters:

For new deployment:

  • Deploy the first Platform VM (large) and apply the license.
  • After the license is applied, deploy proxy and pair it up with the first Platform.
  • Follow below steps from 1 to 8.

For existing deployment:

  1. Deploy additional Platform VMs (of same version) and do not apply license for Additional instances.
    • These additional nodes will be licensed automatically after the cluster's creation via the license from the main licensed node
    • Note: If the licenses are applied to additional nodes, it cannot be used to create cluster.
  2. Log in to the additional VMs using cli and run these commands to ensure that all the services are up and running:

    (cli) show-version

Ensure the version and build number is same as primary Platform VM.

    (cli) show-service-status
    ElasticSearch is running.
    HMaster is running.
    HRegionServer is running.
    Kafka is running.QuorumPeerMain is running.
    ResourceManager is running.
    NodeManager is running.
    SaasListener is running.
    restapilayer is running.
    SamzaAppMaster is running.
    SamzaContainer is running.do do
    Launcher is running.
    postgresql is running.
    nginx is running.
    patroni is running.

    All required services are running.
  3. Note the IP Address of additional Platform VM(s).
  4. Log in to Primary Platform VM with admin privileges.
  5. Go to Settings > Install and support.
  6. Click Create Cluster in platform VM section.
  7. Provide the IP Address of new additional Platform VMs.
  8. Provide the password from the "support" user and click Submit

Additional Information

  • Applying license on additional VMs will generate service tag and it will be considered as individual / unique deployment and cannot be added as cluster member.
  • Contact VMware Support to design your Platform Cluster. For more information, see How to Submit a Support Request
