VMware Tanzu Application Service for VMs

Issue/Introduction

This article explains why you are not receiving email notifications when autoscale events happen for your application.

Symptom

You configured Email Notifications for the Tanzu Application Service (TAS) tile and see that autoscaling events happen for your app but you do not receive any related emails.

Resolution

The first thing to check is that Email Notifications are configured correctly for the TAS tile. On the TAS tile's "Email Notifications" tab, make sure it is set to use an SMPTP server (SendGrid) with the TLS port and "SMTP Enable Automatic STARTTLS" is checked. Confirm this is setup correctly by sending an email from Apps Manager inviting a user to join your org/space.

Next, on the TAS tile, make sure that the "Notifications Errand", "Notifications UI Errand", and "App Autoscaler Errand" are run successfully. To confirm this, open the "system/notifications-with-ui" org / space in Apps Manager and click the route associated with the "notifications-ui" application. On the Notifications UI page that appears, confirm that notifications for the "Cloud Foundry Autoscaling Service" are enabled.

A developer can enable / disable the notification via Notification UI at https://notifications-ui.<SYSTEM_DOMAIN>/preferences. Be aware that the "Cloud Foundry Autoscaling Service" checkbox will be only displayed after the first Autoscaling event for apps that are managed by the user. The reason is to not display the settings for users who are not using the Autoscaling.

Finally, for the user to receive emails, add the user / email to all orgs / spaces containing the apps to be Autoscaled for which this user should be notified and make this user / email a "Space Developer" in that org / space. That part is key. If the user is not a "Space Developer", emails won't be sent.
