Issue/Introduction

Tanzu GemFire for VMs does not use cache.xml, but uses gfsh and the cluster configuration service.

When looking at the Tanzu GemFire for VMs locator logs, you may see the property
cache-xml-file=cache.xml. This is simply a default value and does not indicate that a cache.xml file is being used.

Tanzu GemFire for VMs sets the property, enable-cluster-configuration = true. This means that Tanzu GemFire for VMs uses the cluster configuration service.

When using the cluster configuration service, the GemFire cache is configured using gfsh. This service includes the persisted configurations of regions, disk stores, members, and other Tanzu GemFire objects. When new members join the cluster, the service distributes the configuration to the new members.

Resolution

Tanzu GemFire for VMs uses the cluster configuration service by default and explicitly does not use a cache.xml file for configuration. All configuration tasks, such as creating the regions, disk stores, etc. are done via gfsh.

For more info, refer to Overview of the Cluster Configuration Service.
