Operations Manager

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

The Operations (Ops) Manager Director tile tests that the vCenter user has required privileges. It reports that the following privileges are needed at the Datacenter level. However, the account has been given the following privileges:

  • Folder.Delete
  • VirtualMachine.Inventory.Delete
  • VirtualMachine.Inventory.Unregister

Environment

Cause

As per the Pivotal Document on vSphere/vCenter RequirementsOps Manager requires read/write permissions to the datacenter level of the vSphere Inventory Hierarchy to successfully install"

Ops Manager will throw this error when the permissions are not set on the root level. If your permissions are set at a lower, more granular level, then you can ignore this warning from the validation.

Resolution

As per the Pivotal Document on vSphere/vCenter RequirementsPivotal recommends using the default VMware Administrator System Role to achieve the appropriate permission level or a custom role that has all privileges for all objects in the datacenter, including propagating privileges to children.

Should you wish to use more granular permissions, be advised that Ops Manager might indicate that you do not have the appropriate rights to create/delete folders when this is untrue. If so, click "Ignore errors and start the install" to continue."
