Agent Fails To Install With Error 0x424

Issue/Introduction

• Agent installation ends abruptly without completing.
• Agent install log includes logs with the error code, similar to:

  <Cb Log> [12-1-2024 11:07:09] INFO:   Installing File System Driver 'C:\Windows\system32\DRVSTORE\parity_CBC68D93D3185938E019F22E7342155DB07C4462\parity.inf' 
  <Cb Log> [12-1-2024 11:07:09] ERROR:  Unable to open service 'ParityDriver' to start it because of error 0x424 
  <Cb Log> [12-1-2024 11:07:09] SUCCESS:Installation completed with code 0x0. 

Environment

• App Control Agent: All Supported Versions
• Microsoft Windows: All Supported Versions

Cause

Typically this is caused by an issue with the Microsoft Cryptographic Service, or permissions/restrictions on the catroot directory. 

Resolution

1. Use an administrative command prompt to temporarily stop the Microsoft Cryptographic Service:

   net stop cryptsvc

2. Rename the existing Catroot2 folder, example:

   ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old

3. Start the Cryptographic services and attempt the Agent installation once more:

   net start cryptsvc
