CB Protection: Shared Memory Provider Timeout Errors in Install Log

Issue/Introduction

  • Protection server install fails with "Unable to set database settings"
  • Entries in install log stating "SQL: Exception 'Shared Memory Provider: Timeout error [258]'"

Environment

  • CB Protection Server: 7.x and Higher
  • SQL Server: All Supported Versions

Cause

SQL Server is configured with only the "Shared Memory Provider" protocol enabled.

Resolution

  1. Open SQL Configuration Manager.
  2. Locate and expand the configuration options for the problem SQL instance.
  3. Select "Client Protocols".
  4. Make sure all 3 options are enabled (Shared Memory, TCP/IP, and Named Pipes).

Additional Information

  • This is likely configure properly by default on a fresh SQL install, but that isn't always the case.
  • There may be multiple entries in the SQL Configuration Manager, adjust the settings until the Protection install completes without errors
