CB Defense: Windows Sensor Installation Fails with Error Mentioning CbELAM.sys

• Carbon Black Cloud Endpoint Standard (formerly Cb Defense)

Issue/Introduction

• When Sensor is uninstalled then reinstalled and installation fails
• Running Sensor Removal Tool process does not allow installation to succeed 
• Install Logs mention "CopyDriver: ERROR: copy CbELAM.sys failed: 3"

Environment

• CB Defense Sensor: 3.4.0.820 or Higher
• Microsoft Windows: All Supported Versions

Cause

Components of previous installation of CB Defense Sensor failed and left CbELAM.sys

Resolution

1. Delete the following file

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CbELAM.sys

2. Run the installation of the CB Defense Sensor 

Additional Information

If the CbELAM.sys error is showing in the logs but the file is not in that location, then try creating the directory C:\Windows\ELAMBKUP before the install. If that doesn't work please open a Support Case.
