Issue/Introduction

Why do Macs running macOS 10.14.5 issue a System Extension Warning after a successful install of the Sensor?

Example:

System Extension Warning

One or more system extensions that you have approved will be incompatible with a future version of
macOS. Please contact "Carbon Black, Inc." for support.

Environment

  • CB Defense PSC Sensor: 3.2.x.x and higher
  • Apple macOS: 10.14.5

Resolution

This references the fact that Apple will be deprecating the Kernel Extension (KEXT) in favor of a System Extension framework

Additional Information

  • This issue does not affect current Sensor compatibility with macOS 10.14.x
  • Apple has not yet defined when KEXTs will be deprecated; the System Extension framework will be introduced with macOS 10.15 (Catalina)
  • The initial release of macOS 10.15 (Catalina) will still allow KEXTs
  • Carbon Black is planning for this occurrence as noted here
