App Control: How to Create a Template Computer

Issue/Introduction

This article will demonstrate how to configure an Agent as a Template Computer in the App Control Console.

Environment

• App Control Agent: All Supported Versions
• App Control Console: All Supported Versions

Resolution

1. Login to the machine that will be used as the Template Computer and complete the installation of all necessary programs, including the App Control Agent.
2. Login to the App Control Console and navigate to Assets > Computers > find the relevant Computer > click View Details (pencil icon).
3. On the Computer Details page click the Connection History tab to verify Initialization has completed and that Synchronization is at 100%.
   Note: Files added to the Template Computer after the Agent is installed will be included in Synchronization, not Initialization. Wait for both Initialization and Synchronization to complete complete before proceeding to the next steps.
4. Shutdown the Template Computer.
5. From the Computer Details page > right-hand menu > Advanced > click Convert to Template.
   Note: At this point the Template Computer has been saved and the Computer Details page will now show as Template Details.
6. Configure the Template Details as necessary (such as changing the Name, the Cleanup and Inventory Parameters, etcetera) and save any relevant changes.
7. Create Clones from the Template Computer in the virtualization software using the Template Computer. The Clones will appear as new Computers in your Console.

Important: Unless completing specific tasks, such as upgrades or configuration changes, do not power on the Template Computer. If a Template Computer is brought back online, it will appear as a Clone of itself and the new Clone must be converted into a Template Computer.

Additional Information

• The Template Computer option should not be used for Instant Clones beginning with version 8.7.
• The Template Computer should not be powered on unless making changes to the Golden Image.
• Many customers choose the Clone Inventory option, "New and modified files" for Non-persistent environments for performance reasons.
