Issue/Introduction

Steps to upgrade the SQL Server currently hosting an App Control database.

Environment

  • App Control Server: All Supported Versions
  • Microsoft Windows Server: All Supported Versions
  • Microsoft SQL Server: All Supported Versions

Resolution

  1. Verify the App Control Server version in use supports the desired SQL Server version.
  2. If an Agent is installed on the SQL Server, temporarily move it into Local Approval.
  3. Stop the App Control Server & Reporter services and temporarily set them to Startup type: Disabled.
  4. Make a full backup of the DAS database.
  5. If the server is a VM, taking a snapshot to revert back to could be useful.
  6. Upgrade the SQL Server Instance.
  7. Once upgrade is complete, verify the DAS database is still attached and online.
    • If database is not, restore the DAS database from the backup you took before the upgrade.
  8. Start the App Control Server & App Control Reporter services and set the Startup type of each to: Automatic.
  9. Log in to the Console and verify functionality.
  10. If an Agent was moved to Local Approval, move it back to the previous Enforcement Level.

Additional Information

  • The latest updates for Microsoft SQL Server can be found here.
  • App Control Server does require the latest Cumulative Update (includes functional and security fixes), rather than the GDR (security fixes only).
  • While adjusting the Agent Enforcement Level is not required, it may be helpful as your Console will be unavailable for Approvals/adjustments while the upgrade is occurring.
  • If you are finding errors after the upgrade, please open a support ticket for assistance.
