App Control: Server Service Fails to Start with Error 14001

Issue/Introduction

• App Control Server service fails to start with the error message:

  Windows Could not start the App Control Server service on Local Computer.
  
  Error 14001: The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

• ParityServer.exe.Config file is empty
• Windows Application Events show an XML formatting error on the ParityServer.exe.Config file
• Windows Application Events show a SidebySide load error:

  Activation context generation failed for "PATH\Parity Server\ParityServer.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "PATH\Parity Server\ParityServer.exe.Config" on line 0. Invalid Xml syntax.

  
   

Environment

• App Control Server: All Supported Versions

Cause

During the creation or update of the ParityServer.exe.Config file, it was corrupted. 

Resolution

1. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Bit9\Parity Server\
2. Delete the ParityServer.exe.Config file. 
3. Start the App Control Server service. 

Additional Information

• Please make sure to not delete any of the similarly named files, such as the ParityServer.config or ParityServer.exe files. 
• If the application server is protected by an Agent, you may need to first fully disable the Agent via the command line.
