App Control: How to Migrate a Server Installation (Single Tier)

How to migrate the App Control Server to a different application server.


  • App Control Server: All Supported Versions
  • App Control Installation: Single Tier 
  • Microsoft SQL Server: All Supported Versions
  • Microsoft Windows Server: All Supported Versions


  1. Make backups of:
  2. Power down, rename, or otherwise quarantine the existing application server to prevent networking conflicts.
  3. Log in to the new application server as the Carbon Black Service Account.
    1. Restore the App Control das database.
    2. Install App Control Server as outlined in Server Documentation > Server Installation Guide on VMware Docs.
      • It is recommended to use the same App Control Server version as was used previously.
      • It's recommended to use a CNAME for the server name to avoid changing the hostname at time of migration
      • If a new server name is used during the migration, after completion please make sure to update the Trusted Certificate and add the old server name to the SAN field
      • When prompted, choose "Use Existing Database".
      • When prompted, use the Console and IIS Certificates stored in the database. If necessary, use the exported backups.
  4. After installation is complete, login to the Console and confirm Agents are connecting.

Additional Information

After you have verified the Console is working on the new application server be sure to remove the old App Control Server software:
  1. Login to the App Control Server as the Carbon Black Service Account.
  2. If an App Control Agent is installed on the server, temporarily move it into a Disabled Policy.
  3. Navigate to Start > Run > appwiz.cpl > click OK.
  4. Using the Programs and Features wizard, uninstall App Control Server.
