Issue/Introduction

How to migrate the App Control server to a new host server with a local database (single tier)

Environment

  • App Control Server: All Supported Versions
  • Microsoft SQL Server: All Supported Versions
  • Microsoft Windows Server: All Supported Versions

Resolution

  1. Backup the following:
  2. Shutdown or stop the App Control services on the existing server to prevent conflict
  3. Log in to the new application server with the App Control service account
    1. Restore the App Control das database
    2. Install App Control server as outlined in Server Installation guide on VMware Docs
      • It's best practice to use the same App Control server version as it was used previously and then upgrade to the latest
      • It's best practice to use CNAME DNS record for the App Control server app and just update it to point to the IP address of the new server
      • If the App Control server name is updated during install then the Trusted Certificate will also change, so make sure to update the Trusted Certificate and add the old server name to the SAN field
      • During install choose "Use Existing Database"
      • During install choose the IIS Certificates stored in the database or create a new one and then restore it from the backup
  4. After installation is complete, login to the Console and confirm agents are connecting

Additional Information

After you have verified that the console is working on the new application server be sure to remove/uninstall the old App Control Server
