Issue/Introduction

High CPU is seen when compiling code with Visual Studio.

Environment

  • App Control Agent: All Supported Versions
  • Microsoft Windows: All Supported Versions

Cause

Large numbers of file modifications and process spawning by Visual Studio in a short amount of time.

Resolution

  1. Log in to the Console and navigate to Rules > Software Rules > Rapid Configs.
  2. Locate Visual Studio and click View Details (pencil icon).
    • Visual Studio Locations:  Locations will be identified using well known registry keys. If there are additional installation locations for Visual Studio please enter them here.
    • Intermediate Files To Ignore: Add or remove file types accordingly.
    • Users and Groups: By default this is Any User but if desired it could be restricted.
    • Settings Apply To: It is recommended to limit this to Policies where Visual Studio would be expected to run (Example: Developers-High Enforcement)
  3. Click Save.
  4. Wait for Agents to show as Connected & Up to Date with the new settings.

Additional Information

  • This Rapid Config approves Visual Studio builds and ignores intermediate build files which can improve the performance of Visual Studio builds.
  • Should the performance not improve please follow these steps for Windows.
