Issue/Introduction

Is there a tool to test disk performance prior to installing the App Control Application on a server?

Environment

  • App Control Server: All Supported Versions
  • Microsoft Windows: All Supported Versions
  • Microsoft SQL Server: All Supported Versions

Resolution

Yes, there are two different ways to validate storage performance depending on the storage method.

  • When using Direct-attached Storage: The CbPTest Tool (attached) should be utilized.
    • This is a lightweight, 30-minute test that uses the SQLIO Tool to measure storage performance.
  • When using Storage Area Network (SAN): The Microsoft diskspd utility should be utilized.
    • This will take roughly 20 minutes per disk

Further details on how to use the tools, as well as the Required Performance Metrics, can be found on VMware Docs > Server Documentation > SQL Server Configuration Guide > Validating Storage Performance.

Additional Information

  • This tool does not replace the steps to qualify the environment this is specific to disk performance and will want to review the following for the version you are installing
    • User Guide
    • Server installation guide
    • Operating Environment Requirements
