What is the difference between product and platform within CloudHealth asset report?

Issue/Introduction

In any asset report, "Product" refers to a specific AWS service or offering, such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) or Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS).

 

"Platform" refers to the category of the AWS service, such as compute, storage, networking, or database.  The platform category groups together similar services that share similar cost drivers and optimization strategies.

 

For example, EC2 and Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) are both products under the compute platform category.  By grouping them together, the platform view provides a high-level overview of the costs and usage trends for compute resources as a whole, while the product view allows for more detailed analysis of each specific compute service.
