Issue/Introduction

How may I restrict my Telon PWS user access to the TDF-specific functions listed on the desktop Telon and Utilities menus?

Environment

TelonĀ® Application Generator

Resolution

  1. From the Telon menu, choose CA-Telon Design Facility. On the CA-Telon Design Facility dialog, specify the TDF Database and TDF Help Database you want to use. Click OK to continue.
  2. The TDF Main Menu opens, providing access to TDF functions and menus. From here, you can open the TDF Installation Menu and customize access rights by user type. To open this menu, type Install at the Command prompt and press Enter.
  3. To update access to TDF functions, enter the following and press Enter:
    • UP in the Function field
    • PC (Restrict PWS Desktop Security) in the Item field
    • The password for the TDF database you are accessing (CSIMK is the default)
    • The code (A, C, or P) for the user type that you want to update in the Restrict field

On the Update PWS Desktop Security screen, you can restrict access to the functions on the Telon and Utilities menus, or even to the menus themselves. If you restrict access to an entire menu, none of the menu items is accessible, even if their individual indicator is set to Y. However, if you enable access to an entire menu, you can restrict access to a menu item by setting its indicator to N.

  4. To put the new access rights into effect, exit the TDF and restart the PWS Desktop.

For Example:

Suppose you are a Telon Administrator, and you wish to restrict the ability of your programmers to import or transport information into Data Administration in a production TDF database.
Here's what you could do:

  1. Follow the steps outlined above to access the Update PWS Desktop Security screen for the Programmer level. Set the Import Database and Transport In flags to N. Use PF3 successively to exit the TDF.
  2. Next, exit the PWS Desktop, and re-start it. This allows the security settings to take effect. From the Telon menu, select Import. The following sub-menu appears, and Import Database is now greyed.
  3. From the Telon menu, select Transport. The following sub-menu appears, with Transport In greyed
  4. The changes you made apply to any user who wishes to access your production database, and who has the restrict level of Programmer. These same restrictions apply to batch access to the Import Database and Transport In functions against the same production database. If an unauthorized user attempts to run one of these processes in batch, the execution will not be allowed, and a message box appears.

In addition, a message is written to the Telon Log file to indicate that a User attempted to run an unauthorized process:

Mon Oct 20 Batch run message-> CA-Telon/PWS Server Authorization Error:

User TELONPC(A) not authorized for function IMPD

By establishing these PWS Desktop Security settings, you have protected your production TDF database Data Administration from unwanted updates by either Import Database or Transport In.
