For AWS, when an EC2 instance is deleted, any EBS volumes attached to the instance are not always automatically deleted. In this situation, they get reported as ‘unattached volumes’.
For Azure, when a Virtual Machine (VM) is deleted any disks attached to the VM are not always automatically deleted either. This also results in them being reported as ‘unattached disks’.
These unattached disks/volumes will still be incurring a cost on a regular basis so a best practice is to delete them if they are no longer required.
