Issue/Introduction

It is recommended to never allow an IDMS database area to exceed 70% utilization. This is documented at Practices for Monitoring and Managing Your Operation under the heading Monitor Key System Resources. The intent is that when an area reaches 70% full, users should begin to plan to enlarge the area.

Environment

Release: All supported releases.

Cause

The reason for this recommendation is that as more individual pages exceed 70% utilized, it is possible that performance may become less than optimal. Technically, this is due to the internal architecture of IDMS, specifically around the maintenance of Space Management Pages.

Resolution

Use PRINT SPACE to monitor space utilization.

There are various methods for increasing the size of an IDMS database area.
