It is recommended to never allow an IDMS database area to exceed 70% utilization. The intent is that when an area reaches 70% full, users should begin to plan to enlarge the area.

The reason for this recommendation is that as more individual pages exceed 70% utilized, it is possible that performance may become less than optimal. Technically, this is due to the internal architecture of IDMS, specifically around the maintenance of Space Management Pages.
