Here are some simple tricks to get more work done in Scheduler in less time.
Power User Trick #1: Commands from Anywhere - You can enter almost any command from almost any screen in Scheduler just by typing "SCHD command" on the top line of the screen. (The field will either say COMMAND ===> or OPTION ===>.)
For example, after defining or updating a job, you do not need to go to option 1.3 to issue a RUN JOB command. Instead, you could type SCHD RUN JOB N=MYJOB on the command line. After viewing the output of the command, pressing PF3 returns you to the job menu where you issue the command.
Or, you might be editing a job's definition and need to see how another job is defined. SCHD LIST JOB N=OTHERJOB on the command line will display the other job. PF3 brings you back to the job you started with.
Power User Trick #2: Command Prompting - When you want to use the command prompts in option 1.3, you can get to the specific screen you want directly from anyplace else in Scheduler. Just type "=1.3.command.object" on the command line.
For example, you can get to the RUN SCHEDULE screen by typing =1.3.RUN.SCHEDULE, or you can abbreviate it as =1.3.RUN.S. Likewise the POST DSN screen may be reached by typing =1.3.POST.DSN.
Power User Trick #3: Refreshing Status Display - You have two ways to refresh the job and schedule status displays. Pressing PF5 will show you the current status of the schedules or jobs you have on the screen. Pressing PF6 will show you the jobs and schedules that currently match your selections.
For example, suppose you are in option 1.2 and select only failed jobs, and CA Scheduler displays five jobs that are currently failed. Press PF5 will show you the current status of those five jobs and no others. As the problems with those jobs are corrected, their status will probably change to Submitted, Started and eventually Completed. You will see these statuses even though you originally only asked to see failed jobs.
On the other hand, press PF6 will re-search the active workload for failed jobs. As our original five jobs get corrected they will be removed from the display, replaced by any other jobs that have failed since your original request.
Power User Trick #4: Positioning within Job Definitions - Job definitions within Scheduler span many screens. You do not need to scroll using PF7 and PF8 to position to the screen you want. Instead, you can use a "jump" command to go directly to the desired screen.
For example, typing "TIME" on the command line while looking a job definition jumps to the screen with the early start and other time fields. The jump command "XPLAT" moves to the cross-platform definition screen, "MSG" moves to the message definitions, and so on.
The CA Scheduler Online Reference Guide has a list of the jump commands available for each screen. Before looking them up, however, try a command that makes sense to see if it is defined. Try "FAIL" for the fail code, or even "TOP" and "BOT" for the first and last screens.
Jump commands also work in schedule definitions, job and schedule status detail, the ADD JOB screens, date tables and calendars.
