Edge SWG Virtual Appliance error "Lic_validation: communication problem"

Issue/Introduction

Edge SWG Virtual Appliance (formerly ProxySG) reports the following error in the Event Log:

The Edge SWG Virtual Appliance (VA) may also show the following health check warnings:

Stat: Base License Expiration
Current State                 : CRITICAL
Stat: SSL Proxy License Expiration
Current State                 : CRITICAL
Stat: License Server Communication Status
Current State                 : CRITICAL

 

Environment

Cause

Connectivity issues between the Edge SWG VA and the license server.

Resolution

The messages are reporting that there is a communication failure between the Edge SWG VA and the licensing server validation.es.bluecoat.com. To troubleshoot the communication failure, verify that the name validation.es.bluecoat.com can be resolved on the Edge SWG VA. If not, then verify DNS services.

If the name resolves, then verify connectivity by collecting a packet capture.
