Inventory Solution

Issue/Introduction

Inventory shows the wrong processor count for the Red Hat clients under the "Processors" tab for the Hardware details of a Linux VM (Virtual Machine).

Environment

ITMS 8.6 RU3

RHEL 7.9

Cause

'CPU Hot Plug' for this VM (Virtual Machine) is enabled. This option allows you to customize the number of used CPU without shutting down the VM. Once this is done, all possible 128 CPU are visible to the VM but only a defined count of them is used.

Resolution

Use the "dmidecode" utility (it is a native Linux utility) and check to see if it shows the same. In this particular example, it has 8 enabled CPUs and 120 disabled CPUs.

Computer Hardware details shows the count of available CPUs returned by the native utility (both disabled and enabled), that's why inventory shows 128 CPUs.

"Count of Computers by Processor Speed, Type, and OS" shows counts of actually used processors.
