Issue/Introduction

We are in the process of redirecting all physical 3592 tape creation to VTS, to eliminate the usage of physical tapes (3592).

1. We have about 200 3592 tapes defined to a tape pool to be used for Dispatch archiving. How do I tell Dispatch to stop using the tapes in the 3592 pool, and to start using the VTS scratch pool for all new archive tapes?

2. Once the Storage Team has migrated to VTS, they would like to move the existing Dispatch archive data on physical 3592 tapes to virtual tapes. Is there is a utility/job in Dispatch that can do this?

Environment

Dispatch, 11.7, stop, prevent, archive, old, new, media, prevent, tape, vts, migrate, data, move, copy, arch1, subtask, close, active

Cause

Environmental changes.

Resolution

1. To STOP Dispatch from using the current pool of 3592 tapes and force to START archiving newly processed data to the VTS...

a. Access the 'VOPMI100-Subtask Status Screen' (via option 8.1 from the main menu). Tab down next to the ARCH1 task and type an 'E' next to it to END the archive task.

b. Access the 'VSGMU210-Sysgen Archive Control Information Screen' (via option 9.A from the main menu). Tab over to the 'Volser/File' column and, using the space bar, clear the tape number out of the Volser/File field. Then press ENTER and make sure you receive a confirmation message that the update was successful. This process closes out the currently active archive VOLSER.

c. Access the 'VSGMU215-Sysgen Archive Task Information Screen' by tabbing down next the the ARCH1 task and typing an 'S" next to it. On the VSGMU215 screen, change the TAPE UNIT to the system esoteric definition for your VTS. Then press ENTER and confirm the update was successful.

d. Access the 'VOPMI100-Subtask Status Screen' again (via option 8.1 from the main menu). Tab down next to the ARCH1 task and type an 'X' next to it to RESTART the external archive subtask (Or type an 'S' next to it if you are running the archive subtask internally).

e. Upon restarting the archive subtask, it will request that a NEW VTS tape be mounted. All subsequent archive task startups will also use the VTS media.

*NOTE*

After making the above change, Dispatch will archive all NEWLY processed reports to the new VTS media. At this point, the previous system esoteric for the 3592's will still need to be kept in place so that the Dispatch EXTRACT subtask will be able to allocate and mount the 3592 tapes for RECALL/reprint, until such time as all of the older reports on the 3592's have been migrated over to the new VTS media.

2. Regarding migration of data on the existing 3592 tape archives to the new VTS media...
