Issue/Introduction

Upgrade Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) to 14.3 Ru8 version results in error:

Environment

SEPM running old version with embedded database that will be upgraded to new version with SQL express.

Cause

User that is performing the installation do not have all required permissions.

In the SQL server logs located in <SQL dir>\Setup Bootstrap\Log\Summary.txt. we can see following message:

" Exit message: The account that is running SQL Server Setup does not have one or all of the following rights: the right to back up files and directories, the right to manage auditing and the security log and the right to debug programs. To continue, use an account with both of these rights. For more information, see https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms813696.aspx, https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms813959.aspx and https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms813847.aspx."

Resolution

Proceed with Microsoft recommendations in:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/troubleshoot/sql/database-engine/install/windows/installation-fails-if-remove-user-right

Next run:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\bin\upgrade.bat
