COMMON SERVICES FOR Z/OS

Issue/Introduction

Common Components and Services (CCS) for z/OS 15.0 solutions LU09343 and LU08836 enhance the Feature Registration Service (FRS) and ISV SCRT reporting.

This article provides a brief explanation of what is meant by unlicensed products.

Cause

Confusing/Misinterpreted usage of the word "unlicensed" in the following solutions:

LU09343 - UNLICENSED PRODUCTS ADDED TO XML FILE

LU08836 - FEATURE REGISTRATION SERVICE - SUPPORT UNLICENSED PRODUCTS

Resolution

Solutions LU09343 and LU08836 enhanced the Feature Registration Service (FRS) to allow reporting of a product or component that does not require a license key.

  • Common Component and Services (CCS) is an example of a product that does not require a license key to run.

Initially Broadcom SCRT Reporting relied solely on products calling the License Management Program (LMP) common service, but with this enhancement a non licensed product or component can be registered so it will show up on a Broadcom SCRT report if that product or component is used during the reporting period.

Unfortunately these two solutions used the term "unlicensed" which may lead someone to assume a licensed product somehow became unlicensed. This is not the case. The correct term is a non licensed product or component, which simply means the product or component does not make a license check call to LMP.
