Issue/Introduction

The following steps describe the best practices for upgrading your group model(s) from one major Plex release to another. These steps should be handy when you upgrade Plex

Environment

CA Plex all versions

Resolution

References made to the 'Current release' mean the Plex release to upgrade FROM. 'New release' is the Plex release to upgrade TO.

  1. Update any outstanding local models to their respective current release group models.

  2. Create a backup copy of each and every one of your group models.
(optionally - may also want to create new locals from each group and save the local with its originating group model).

IMPORTANT: DO NOT move the current version group model location until you have finished the upgrade process.

  3. Create a copy of each and every one of your group models and place it in a directory location to be used with the new release.

NOTE: once you login to a group model with a later Plex release, it is then not possible to login to it with a prior Plex release.

  4. Install the new Plex release. A major upgrade will allow a side-by-side install onto the same machine.

  5. The Plex pattern libraries will install on the local machine; if you choose a custom install, this option allows the class libraries to also install. They are not installed with the typical install option.

NOTE: after install, but before upgrading, copy the class and pattern libraries to a network directory, if desired.

  6. Analyze the existing group model structure to determine the order in which to upgrade the groups. For example, a GroupModel A that refers only to the Plex class and/or pattern libraries would need to upgrade first, followed by libraries that then reference GroupModel A. And so on.

  7. Open the new release of Plex, and login to the first group model to upgrade.

Check ON the login options to 'Prompt All Library Paths' and 'Reset Local Default Library Paths'. When prompted for the library location, either browse or type in the correct library name and location of the group models set up for use with the new release (those created in step 3 above) and use either the local or network location for the class and/or pattern libraries.

  8. Highlight the host group model in the primary group model window, choose Configuration from the main menu, then choose Libraries.

  9. A window appears with path names to current version group models. Remove the path to the current version group model, and add back a path to the new release version group model. (Recommend removing one, then adding one, removing the next, then adding the next, etc., rather than removing ALL the libraries at once, to insure a library is not missed.)

  10. Optional: Create a new local model from this group.

  11. Close and save this group model (& local model).

  12. Repeat step 7, 8, 9 for each of your group models.
