Dynamic Capacity Intelligence

Issue/Introduction

Migrating existing IBM hardware to z16. Is there any action required on Dynamic Capacity Intelligence (DCI) 2.0 side? Is a new license key required?

Environment

Release : 2.0

Resolution

  1. Per the IBM zEnterprise Compatibility Matrix page of the Broadcom Support portal, DCI 2.0 is compatible with the z16 hardware.
  2. If using the new format of the LMP keys (the ones using SITEID instead of the CPU serial), then there is no need for a new license key. See "Format of the new SITEID LMP keys and its benefit" article:
The new LMP keys that are based on SITEID/SITECODES can be used after CPU upgrades without requesting for a new/different one from Broadcom as it's not based on CPU id.
  3. If the CPC ID changes, then the DCI policies (see "How to change a wrong CPC name in a DCI policy" article), extensions, System Definition Table, Custom Label Definitions and Alerts must be reviewed/updated.

Additional Information

The hardware upgrade will result in performance improvements at the Service Class level. This impacts the relevance of WLM Policy performance goals, and hence which workloads experience restricted service in capping situations.

Broadcom recommends a review of the WLM policies as a matter of course.  An MRI Capacity Optimisation Scan can help to identify sub-optimal performance goals.
