Issue/Introduction

You may notice "voltage sensor for Voltage 12V Rail" or "Type: the FRU is not installed" messages in /var/log/messages after the pink banner is displayed in the Web UI.  These are typically one time events and are only for the "Enclosure Management Processor (EMP)".  This is the management controller.  These have been reported to be caused by a SAS scan which force the controller to get a status update from all supporting hardware.  The key here is that the problem is reported for both of the power supplies but the system continues to run.

Unless the errors continue, they can be ignored. They occur periodically. We are working with Dell to resolve this.

Environment

Release : 8.2.6-55530

Cause

These are caused by a SAS restart causing the management controller in the storage array to validate each sensor.  The power supplies do not report before the controller expects a return.  Therefore, the controller reports that the power sensors are in an "alert condition." The errors can be found by running "zgrep HARDWARE /var/log/messages*" as root.

Resolution

There is no firmware update to prevent these errors from showing as of the writing of this article (February 2023).  Expect them to only be reported once within one second.  If there are more, then reach out to technical support. There is no problem and the messages may be ignored.
