Issue/Introduction

I am deploying the VMware Monitoring (vmware) probe with templates.

•  When I create my own template, what parts should I enable in the different sections that appear when I expand the template?

•  When I'm using the default templates (like UMP/OC Metrics) why we can see the same metrics enabled twice?

Environment

  • Release: UIM 20.x
  • Component: vmware v7.x

Cause

  • Guidance

Resolution

What you need to enable depends on what you connected the vmware probe to...

The probe can connect to either a vCenter or to an ESXi server. VMware vSphere Documentation

Looking at the probe docs:  vmware AC Apply Monitoring with Templates (broadcom.com)

Frequently Asked Questions
What sections of the template should I configure?
vCenter: If you set up the probe to connect to the vCenter, configure the section of the template that is labeled "Virtual Center VM." When you configure the Virtual Center VM section of the template, the template is applied to all the virtual machines in your vCenter.
If you want to monitor physical hosts in your vCenter, then also configure the section of the template that is labeled "Virtual Center Hosts."

ESXi: If you set up the probe to connect to the ESXi server, configure the section of the template that is labeled "ESXi Compute Resource."

Note
: If we look at a template, the sections for "Virtual Center VM" are actually labeled differently from what the docs indicate.

"Virtual Center VM" label would actually be the "Cluster" node:

If you connect to a vCenter and only enable metrics under the "ESXi Compute Resource" section, it is possible that no VM's on the ESXi server will inherit the metrics.

The predefined templates offered by the probe have, for this reason, both "Virtual Center VM (Cluster)" and "ESXi Compute Resource" QOS enabled.

But it doesn't mean that the QOS will be duplicated. It will gather data either from the vCenter or from the VM's under the ESXi Server.

Additional Information

NOTE: If you have previously used the IM GUI for VMware monitoring, or start using AC without Bulk Config, the only option to use the template type of configuration (and activate Bulk config) is to completely remove the probe and redeploy it from scratch. This is by design to avoid configuration inconsistencies.

After you redeploy VMware and enable it you should, as a first step, Enable Bulk configuration and choose whether you need to apply default templates from the very first moment you add a vCenter/ESX server resource. (Apply bulk default template tick box).
