Issue/Introduction

With either a Dell MD3860 or a NetApp external storage array, you may see an error about a drive being bypassed.

BYPASSED_DRIVE-Recovery Failure Type Code: 64

 

Cause

A drive or drive port has been bypassed. This problem can occur for the following reasons:

• The ESM is defective
• The drive is defective
• The drive is not appropriate for the drive tray
• The drive is not the correct technology type
• The drive is not able to operate at the drive channel link speed
• An interposer is defective

Resolution

95% of the time, the issue can be resolved by replacing the hard drive.  Open a case with technical support to get the drive replaced.
