Issue/Introduction

With either a Dell MD3860 or a NetApp external storage array, you may see an error about a drive being bypassed.

BYPASSED_DRIVE-Recovery Failure Type Code: 64

Cause

A drive or drive port has been bypassed. This problem can occur for the following reasons:

  • The ESM is defective
  • The drive is defective
  • The drive is not appropriate for the drive tray
  • The drive is not the correct technology type
  • The drive is not able to operate at the drive channel link speed
  • An interposer is defective

Resolution

First attempt to reseat the drive.  Remove the drive from the slot for about 30 seconds and then reinsert the drive back into the drawer.  Wait for about 1 minute and then recheck the health of the storage array in SANtricity.

If the problem remains,  open a case with technical support to get the drive replaced.
