Issue/Introduction

This article explains the structure required for the Provisioning Directory (IM Prov Dir) XML to correctly configure load balancing and failover servers. It also provides the procedure to remove servers from the failover list when they are no longer required.

Cause

When the Provisioning Server load balancing is configured, the Identity Manager (IM) objectstore database tracks primary, load-balanced, and failover servers. Exported XML files can sometimes reflect an aggregated list of all servers configured as failover. To explicitly remove servers from the failover list, the database must be forced to update via a specific XML import.

Resolution

To explicitly remove servers from the failover list and ensure the database reflects your desired topology:

1. Prepare the XML: Create an XML import file that explicitly defines the server pools and sets the failover list to include only the desired servers.

2. Force Database Update: Import the prepared XML into the Identity Manager environment. The explicit definition in the XML will force the IM objectstore database to update the IM_DIR_CONNECTION_LD and IM_DIR_CONNECTION tables, removing any servers not explicitly listed.

3. Validate the Configuration: Export the XML again to verify that the failover property now only contains the servers you intended to keep.

Note: All servers act as failovers for any connection bank they are not primary in by design; ensuring the XML list is explicit is the only method to prune unnecessary servers from the configuration.
