What can cause a U3998 ABEND using the VISION:Results Interface to IMS?

When an IMS Interface user encounters a U3997 or U3998 ABEND, the first place to look is page 13-4 in the CA VISION:Interface for IMS/DL/1 With CA VISION:Results Reference Guide. The $1, $2, $3 and $4 return codes are documented there.

This manual explains use of the IMS Interface and provides examples. Chapter 6 goes into details regarding the PCB MASK or 'DSECT'. Though the required naming convention for multiple PCBs is detailed on page 6-1, what should be added is that each PCB must be defined in its own WORK AREA in order to be recognized. Otherwise only the first PCB is recognized and a $4 return code is the result when the subsequent PCB information is not found.
