Issue/Introduction

A process can be set to Active, Draft, or On Hold mode. What do each of these modes do to the process?

Resolution

A process definition can be in the following Mode:

Draft

  • A process definition in Draft mode can be edited and deleted.

  • Process instances cannot be started from a process definition in Draft mode.

  • A process definition must be in Validated status before it can be switched to Active or On-Hold mode.

On Hold

  • A process definition in On Hold mode cannot be edited. It can be deleted if there are no active process instances of this process definition.

  • Process instances cannot be started from a process definition in On Hold mode. However, existing running process instances of this process definition will continue to run until they are canceled or completed.

  • A process definition must be in Validated status before it can be switched to Active mode.

  • A process definition must not have process instances before it can be switched to Draft mode.

Active

  • A process definition in Active mode cannot be edited. It can be deleted if there are no active process instances of this process definition.

  • Process instances can be started from a process definition in Active mode.

  • Only process definitions in Validated status can be in Active mode.

  • Active process definitions having process instances cannot be switched to "Draft" mode. Process instances must be cancelled and/or deleted before the process definition can be switched to "Draft" mode.
