Issue/Introduction

To help prevent the SEP Mobile app from being put to sleep by the Android operating system, Broadcom has introduced the Battery Optimization Option (BOO) permission for SEP Mobile.

Enabling this permission makes proper configuration (i.e the SEP Mobile being on the battery optimization whitelist) required, otherwise SEP Mobile will report a yellow health alert for the device.

The intent of this article is to provide administrators with information on what end users should expect when this new permission is enabled.

Cause

Both Android and iOS now aggressively manage installed apps in an effort to preserve battery life.  Apps which do not appear to have user interaction will be marked for sleeping.  Since SEP Mobile is intended to run in the background, this makes it a common target on either mobile platform to be marked as an app wasting battery, and then be put on the sleeping apps list.

Resolution

By requiring that the BOO setting be enabled on Android, it is possible to prevent the SEP Mobile app from being marked for sleep by the OS.

Please review details about the BOO permission here: About Battery Optimization permission for Android

What to expect when enabling BOO for Android?

  • For new enrollments they will see the following screen during the activation wizard:

  • For existing enrollments where BOO is already enabled, the user will not be prompted

  • For existing devices where BOO is disabled, the user will see the above prompt the next time they open SEP Mobile.  The device will also be put into a yellow health status (for most orgs this will not cause a compliance issue), and the admin can send a notification to the end user from the Management Console to alert them to enable BOO

  • Note that in some situations on certain Android devices, such as installing to the personal profile on a KNOX enabled device, BOO is not necessary and the user will never see this prompt
