Issue/Introduction

How do I reset my AppNeta monitoring point back to factory defaults?  I'd like a simple way to reset the password, or recover an appliance that appears to have failed or will not respond.

Cause

You may encounter a situation where the AppNeta Monitoring point fails to respond.  The device may not be online in the AppNeta Server, and you may not be able to log into the device using its private LAN IP.  If you've confirmed this is the situation, you can attempt a reset procedure.

Resolution

Begin the process with an extended power cycle;

1.  Unplug the power - give it 60 seconds, and power it back on.  This has a tendency to resolve stuck firmware upgrades which has failed to upgrade.  Although this is uncommon, it may be seen during an irregular boot process, or when upgrading from older release to version 13.7.0 and newer.  Wait 15 - 20 mins, which is the full time it takes to complete a firmware upgrade.  If you still don't get any replies over its private Static IP or you fail to see any DHCP leases from your server, then try a reset using the physical button.

2.  Reset using Physical Button:

To reset an appliance to factory defaults and use the local image on the appliance, please try using the reset button.
Press and hold the reset button until the heartbeat LED starts to do a green slow flash (usually about one minute).

R45:   For the R45, to reset the r45 to factory defaults and the local image, reboot the unit by power-cycling. While it’s rebooting, press the F/D button. The LCD will update in < 1 minute when re-flashing begins.

When this is completed, this may take 5-10 mins to resume the boot cycle.  If you have a console cable, you should be able to see the output of the device.  Port settings are typically 115200-8-n-1 or confirm the settings for your model here:  https://docs.appneta.com/category/monitoring-points/#physical-monitoring-points

- This process will retain the devices current software version, so this will not result in changes the software version on the appliance.
- This will set Eth0 (or the primary network connection for your model, see above link)  to defaults, which is DHCP
- This will erase the provisioning on the appliance - it won't be able to register on your AppNeta server, but you'll be able to log in using its DHCP address, and then re-provision the appliance.

3.  If this always fails to respond, the next step will be to attempt a USB reflash.  Please use this method, based on your model:

M50:    M50 Reset to factory defaults - USB image
M70:    M70 Reset to factory defaults - USB image
R90:    R90 Reset to factory defaults - USB image
R1000: R1000 Reset to factory defaults - USB image
R45:    R45 Reset to factory defaults - USB image

Similar notes to this:

- This process will retain the devices current software version, so this will not result in changes the software version on the appliance.
- This will set Eth0 (or the primary network connection for your model, see above link)  to defaults, which is DHCP.
- This will erase the provisioning on the appliance - it won't be able to register on your AppNeta server, but you'll be able to log in using its DHCP address, and then re-provision the appliance.

Additional Information

If restored to factory, the monitoring point will revert back to its default password, which is the MAC address with no spaces or dashes, and all caps.  See the following KB:
