Trying to install WSSA on a Windows 11 VM running on Parallels (on a MacBook Pro M1):

  • Tried to install WSSA several times (and even reinstalled Windows 11) but it never succeeds
  • Logged-in as Administrator

User keeps getting following error:

=======
Installer Information

Service 'Symantec WSS Agent' (wssad) failed to start.
Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services
=======

Environment

MacBook Pro M1

Parallels for VM setup

Windows 11 VM on MacOS M1

Windows natively running on ARM processor

Cause

WSS Agent is not supported on Windows VM's on ARM (Windows VM's running on MacOS M1).

Note too that WSS Agent is not supported on the ARM architecture regardless of OS - it is only supported on Intel/AMD (x86-64) only.

Resolution

Install WSSA on supported platforms only, whether virtualised or not.
