Issue/Introduction

The Memory Trace button offers a user mainly two possibilities

1. Of generating of Memory dumps when the button 'Force Memory Trace Dump' is hit even if no trace flags are set.In this case the processes will all throw a trace files with a minimal size of 32 MBs.

2. In combination with a set trace level and a keyword, the Memory Tracing allows to capture traces file with requested level, when a suspicious keyword comes up in the log files.

This is very helpful when a problem shows up rarely and Broadcom Supports needs to have traces. This is to avoid the accumulation of huge traces files that could impact the system.
If this mode is activated the AE system will only throw traces when the problem related to the entered keyword comes up.

Cause

This behavior (Memory Tracing Checkbox automatically showing up as ticked) has been introduced in V12.3. But the memory tracing existed already before in prior versions.

Environment

Component : AUTOMATION ENGINE 12.3 and higher version

Resolution

What you should keep in mind about the memory tracing:

1. The Memory Tracing is activated per default (checkbox always ticked).
2. If no trace level is set and apply is clicked, this will have no further effect.
3. The Keys that is looking for, must always be set between '*'.
4. Memory Tracing will stop, once the keyword appears in the logs or trace files. Each WP will then throw a memory segment to a trace files of a minimal size of 32 MBs.
5. The generating of forced traces/dumps for any other reason should not interfere with the Memory Tracing if it has been activated.
6. The memory buffer size should take in account the free disk space in order to prevent a file system issue. If there are n WPs and the buffer size is set to 128 MB the free disk space on this support should be more the  nx128MB.
7. To activate the immediate tracing, the Memory Trace checkbox must be unticked.
