XCOM Data Transport - z/OS

Issue/Introduction

Transferring a dataset from z/OS to another z/OS system, but the zIIP processor is not being utilized for the transfer. The system has a zIIP processor and the XCOM parameters are set to take advantage of the zIIP processor. Why isn't the zIIP processor being utilized for this transfer?

Environment

Release : 12.0

Component : XCOM Data Transport for z/OS

Cause

The dataset being transferred has a RECFM=U and the data in that dataset is binary, so packing is not occurring. XCOM packing was designed to pack text or character data and not binary data.

Resolution

Binary data may only use the zIIP processor if the individual records are > than 4096 bytes.

The requirements for the transfer to utilize the zIIP processor are:

1. The XCOM load library must be APF authorized

2. COMPRESS= must be set to anything other than NO

3. The buffer size must be > than 4096 bytes
