Issue/Introduction

Problems exposing disks to MOI zLinux LPAR.

The UCB's for the new disks we are trying to use are:

BX24-BX2F
BZ70-BZ83

When trying to expose the disk from z/OS ISPF panel using the EXPOSE primary command, you issued the cmd `EXPOSE BX24` and got no error message.

But BX24 didn’t appear in the list after cmd returned.

You rebooted the MOI zLinux LPAR and tried again but still not able to expose the new disks. lscss and lsdasd command outputs on the MOI appliance also shows no sign of the newly added disks.

The issue covered in this document is that the EXPOSE command, that makes the disks available to format and add to LVM's, did not expose the list of available disks.

Release : 2.0

zLinux s390x installation

Resolution

After you initially IPL your MOI appliance you must bring online the disks that are needed for installation. After you bring the disks online, you reboot the appliance to finish the installation. After the appliance has installed, you can verify the status.

Here is the process as documented in the MOI Technical Documentation to attempt to EXPOSE the newly added disks:

  • From the main MOI Installation panel,

  • Select 2 - Manage

  • Select your MOI appliance host from the displayed list

  • Select

    3 - Disk Health

From the filesys panel, select the
    lvm0
    entry:

    (s390x Only)
Enter the EXPOSE command and enter the disk range of disks that you want to use for the appliance, such as

    0.0.0202-0.0.0207

    Then, press Enter.

The issue that cause this behavior was that only the four digit disk volume name was entered when the EXPOSE was attempted (i.e. BX24  versus  0.0.BX24).

It is recommended that a range of disks to be exposed should be entered to make the EXPOSE much quicker (i.e.  0.0.BX24 - 0.0.BX2F  and   0.0.BZ70- 0.0.BZ83)
